The Video I Cannot Delete

Nine seconds. Filmed sideways, badly, in a kitchen, in March of the year before last.

Her mother is at the counter doing something with a bag of flour and she looks up and says: are you filming me, and then she says a name, her daughter's name, in the specific way she said it, and then the video ends because somebody came in.

That is it. That is the whole thing. Nine seconds of a woman being mildly annoyed about a phone.

Her mother died in October. It was not slow and it was not gentle, and there had been no reason to film anything, which is why there is only one of these.

She watches it most nights. Not always. But most.

And in the last few months, people have started saying a particular kind of thing to her.

Her roommate, who is kind, said it might be time to think about looking forward. Her aunt said, on the phone, that her mother would not want her sitting in her room watching a video. Somebody at church said something about not living in the past, and she went and stood outside for a while.

Her stepfather is the only person who has never said anything about it, and she loves him for it more than she can explain.

And here is what she has started to think, which is why she is reading this at eleven at night with the phone face down beside her.

She has started to think that the nine seconds are the reason she is not further along. That the video is a hook she is caught on. That if she were a healthier person, or a stronger Christian, she would delete it and something would open up.

If that is a phone anybody has face down beside them, stay right here. There is a verse in Lamentations that has been waiting for this exact accusation for two and a half thousand years.

A soul that keeps things in remembrance

Here it is, and I want you to notice that nobody in the passage tells him to stop.

My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me.Lamentations 3:20

Still in remembrance. That is a man saying that he cannot put something down, and that carrying it has bent him, and he says it in the middle of a poem that is in the Bible.

And here is what happens next, in the very next verse: this I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. The mercies of the Lord, new every morning, the most quoted line in the whole book, is standing directly on top of the verse about a soul that will not stop remembering.

They are two verses apart. Nobody made him let go of the first one to get to the second one.

You are not caught on a hook, and you were never required to put something down before anything else could arrive. Lamentations 3:20 sits two verses beneath the most hopeful line in the book without being removed first, and the Holy Spirit is the one who inspired both of them and left them in that order.

That is worth sitting with, because the accusation you have been running is that the video is blocking something. Scripture puts a soul that still remembers directly underneath new mercies and does not treat one as the obstacle to the other.

You have been carrying rather than clinging, and you were never further back for pressing play. Lamentations 3:20 keeps a memory that humbles a man on the page with no correction attached, and the Spirit of God is not standing in that bedroom waiting for you to delete anything.

Focus forward, and what it actually means

Now let me deal with the roommate and the aunt, because they love you and I am not going to leave you with anything against them.

Focus forward is a phrase from a different world. It comes out of business, out of coaching, out of the general modern habit of treating a person's inner life as a project with milestones in it. It is not from Scripture. It does not appear there, in any form, in any book.

What Scripture does with the past is the opposite. It commands remembering, constantly. Twelve stones in a riverbed so children will ask what they mean. A jar of manna kept for generations. An annual meal built entirely out of retelling. Do this in remembrance of me, said on the last night, about the most important thing that has ever happened.

The Bible's instinct is not to move on. It is to keep the thing where it can be seen.

So when somebody says it might be time to look forward, they are not quoting anything. They are handing you a piece of ordinary contemporary advice, and it is well meant, and it does not have any authority behind it at all.

Right now, as you read this, you are keeping something Scripture would keep, and you were never given a deadline by anybody who has one to give. The written word institutes remembering at length rather than discouraging it, and His Spirit is not on a schedule with you.

It does not get undone, and that is where the comfort has to sit

Here is the part that this whole site exists for, and I am not going to soften it.

Nothing about this gets reversed. Your mother is not coming back into that kitchen. There is no version of the future where the nine seconds turn into ten.

Everybody who tells you to look forward is, underneath, offering a trade: stop looking at what cannot be changed, and something lighter arrives in exchange. And that trade is not available, because the thing they want you to stop looking at is your mother.

So the comfort has to be able to sit inside a loss that stays. Anything else is a sale.

And it can. That is the extraordinary thing. The God of Scripture does not require the situation to improve before He will be in it. He is described as being near to the broken hearted, not near to the recovered. He is described as being with a man in the water, not on the far bank of it.

You are comforted inside an October that does not move, and you were never asked to trade the nine seconds for anything. Psalm 34:18 puts Him near the broken hearted rather than the mended ones, and the Holy Spirit has been in that bedroom on every night you pressed play.
