Comfort That StaysRuth 1:16

Aisle Fourteen

This message is for the woman in the homewares aisle with a kettle in the cart and the church's card in her purse, whose mother's letters and her son's baby book burned with the house and are not on any list, who needs comfort that does not pretend any of it can be undone

The cart has one thing in it, and it is a kettle, and it is the wrong color.

That does not matter. She knows it does not matter. Nothing in this cart matters, which is the whole point of it. The list is written on the back of the loss adjuster's letter in her own handwriting: towels, kettle, toothbrushes x3, school shoes (M), plates, a lamp. Every one of those things is on a shelf somewhere in this building. Every one of them can be paid for with the card the church pressed into her hand on Sunday. By suppertime the three of them will have a kettle again, in a borrowed kitchen, and it will boil, and that is what a list is for. Everything on a list can be replaced. That is how you know it belongs on the list.

Aisle fourteen is cushions and throws. It is Saturday, and it is loud. A couple are disagreeing, gently, about gray against oatmeal. A little boy is riding the front of a cart like the prow of a boat while his father says no, the big one, into a phone. Two women are laughing at a cushion shaped like a slice of toast. Her daughter is two aisles over with the school shoes, taking her time, because taking her time is the one thing she still has that is hers.

And she has stopped. She has stopped in front of the throws because there is a mustard one, second shelf, that is almost, nearly, the color of the one that lived on the back of the couch, and her hand went out to it before she had decided anything.

Her hand is not looking for a throw. Her hand is looking for the box under the stairs with her mother's letters in it, in her mother's handwriting, the loops on the g's. For the baby book with the hospital band taped inside the cover. For the Bible with the ribbon her father left at Psalm 121 the week before he went. There is no aisle for those. They are not on the list because a list is for things that can be bought again, and over the next weeks a kind person will tell her that they were only things, and she will nod, because nodding is easier, and both of them will know it is not true.

You know this aisle. You have stood in it, or in one exactly like it, with a cart full of what can be replaced and a hand that keeps reaching for what cannot. It might not have been a fire. It might be a house you had to sell, a hand that no longer does what it did, a person who is alive and no longer knows you, a chance that had one door and the door has closed. The shape is the same. Everybody around you is talking about the list, and the thing you have actually lost is not on it, and it is not coming back, and you do not want one more person telling you it might, or that God has a plan for it, or that they were only things. You want one person to say the true sentence with you, out loud, in the aisle. It cannot be undone. And then you want that person not to leave.

The woman who asked to be called Bitter

There is a woman in Scripture who came home to her own town with nothing, and when the women at the gate said her name, she refused it.

Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went away full, and the Lord has brought me back empty.Ruth 1:20-21

Naomi means pleasant. Mara means bitter. She stood in front of the whole town and asked to be called by her loss. And here is the thing I want you to see before anything else, because it is the ground everything on this page stands on: nobody corrected her. Not the women of Bethlehem. Not Ruth, standing beside her. Not the writer of the book, who could have added a line. Not God, who is the one she was speaking about. That sentence was allowed to stand, and it is still standing, in the middle of the Bible, exactly as she said it.

You are allowed that sentence, and you were allowed it from the first morning. It cannot be undone, and I do not want to be told otherwise: that is a Naomi sentence, and Scripture kept it on purpose, and the Holy Spirit who breathed the book did not edit her down to something more grateful.

You have God's own written permission to say the loss out loud, at its real size, in the gate, in the aisle, and to be met there rather than argued with.

Because that is what happened to her. She was met.

Ruth 1:16 is the verse people read at weddings, and it was never said at one. It was said on a road, by a widow to a widow, when the older woman had just told the younger one to go home because there was nothing left in her to give.

Where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.Ruth 1:16

Look at what Ruth did not do. She did not explain the deaths. She did not tell Naomi it would all make sense one day in Bethlehem. She did not tell her she still had a lot to be thankful for. The word the book uses is that Ruth clung to her, and it is the same Hebrew word Genesis uses for a man cleaving to his wife: a holding on that does not let go. Comfort, in the book of Ruth, is not a reason. It is a person who refuses to be sent away.

And notice what was not reversed. Elimelech stayed dead. Mahlon stayed dead. Naomi went home empty and said so in public, and Ruth walked beside her the whole road, and Ruth's walking beside her did not put one thing back in the box. It was not supposed to. It was supposed to mean she did not walk home alone.

The Comforter who stays

I keep a shelter, and I will tell you the one rule of the first night, because it is the same rule as this page. When somebody arrives with a bag and no house, nobody asks them what happened. We put the kettle on. We show them where the bed is. We sit down. The story can come when it comes, or never. What a person needs on the first night is not an account of the fire. It is somebody in the chair by the door who is not going anywhere.

Jesus used that word for the Holy Spirit. Not fixer, not explainer. Comforter. And He said the thing that matters most about Him in the same breath: that He may abide with you for ever (John 14:16). Abide. Stay. Lodge, the way Ruth lodged.

So hear this, and let it land slowly. You have a Comforter who did not come to reverse it and did not come to explain it, and you had Him on the night of the fire. He came to stay in it. That is not my hope for you; it is what Jesus said, written down, and the Holy Spirit is the one Jesus was talking about, so He is not a theory of comfort, He is the comfort, and He is in the aisle.

Scripture says the Lord is near to the broken hearted (Psalm 34:18). Near is a place. Not a plan for the loss, not a lesson in it, not a season after which it will hurt less. Near is where He is standing while you hold the wrong throw.

You are held inside this, right now, exactly as it is, unfixed. The word says near and the word says abide, and His Spirit is the one making both of those true in a homewares aisle on a Saturday, with the wrong kettle in the cart and the box under the stairs gone. He is not waiting for you to be further along before He sits down. He sat down when it happened.

The breakthrough

Here is what I am not going to do. I am not going to tell you the box comes back. I am not going to tell you the fire was for something. I am not going to give you a verse that makes the loss smaller than it is, because Naomi was not given one and she was closer to God's heart at that gate than most of the people who quote verses at the grieving.

What I am going to do is what Ruth did on the road, and I am going to do it from Scripture, so it holds when I am not here. Comfort that stays is comfort that has stopped trying to reverse anything. It has put down the list. It has agreed with you, out loud, that the letters are gone and the handwriting is gone and the ribbon at Psalm 121 is gone. And having agreed, it has not left.

You were never given a Comforter on the condition that you feel better. Read the promise again: abide with you for ever. No clause about your mood, no clause about the timetable, and His Spirit is the one keeping that promise in you now, whether you can feel Him in the aisle or not. The comfort is not your achievement. It is His presence, and He is present.

You are accompanied in the part of this that cannot be undone, and you were accompanied before anybody handed you a card. John 14:16 promises a Comforter who abides for ever with no condition about what gets restored, and the Holy Spirit keeps that promise in an aisle on a Saturday.

If tonight what you carry has stopped being grief and become something heavier, a thing you would not say out loud, then say it out loud to a person tonight: your doctor, someone who loves you, or a crisis line where you live, because the Lord who stays also sends people, and letting one of them in is not a failure of faith. It is the first night in the shelter. Somebody sits by the door.

Declare this over yourself

Now say these, out loud, in the aisle if you have to. The authority under them was given to you, because you belong to Christ and He put the Comforter in you, and it does not depend on how steady your voice is or how much of the list you have crossed off. Scripture is the ground under each line and the Holy Spirit is the one carrying it; the words are not a lever on the loss, and nothing here asks God to put the box back. Whatever He does with the weight after you have spoken is His to do, in His timing, and neither a lighter evening nor a heavier one is a verdict on you. Naomi said her true sentence at the gate and was walked home. So say yours.

  1. Box under the stairs, you are gone and you are not coming back, and I am done being told otherwise. Scripture let Naomi stand in the gate and say she came home empty, and nobody in Bethlehem corrected her, so I say it plainly, and the Lord who heard her is hearing me.
  2. Whisper that says they were only things, you do not get to grade my grief. It is written that the Lord is near to the broken hearted, and near is not a verdict on the size of a wound; His Spirit does not measure a loss before He sits down in it, and He has sat down in mine.
  3. Lord, You are the Comforter who came to stay and not to explain, and You are in aisle fourteen with me now, in the name of Jesus. I thank You, because Your Spirit abides in me exactly as John 14:16 says, and I am saying it cannot be undone and I am saying You stay, in the same breath.
