The number is still in her phone under Daughter, which is what it has said since 2009, and she has not deleted it and she is not going to.
Four years. There was no single event that she can point to, which is the part nobody believes. There was a difficult year, and then a conversation that went badly at a wedding, and then a message that she has read about six hundred times and still cannot fully parse, and then nothing.
She sends one text on the birthday and one at Christmas. She keeps them short and warm and asks for nothing, because that is the one strategy she settled on herself and it is the only one she trusts.
Everything else has been handed to her.
Her sister thinks she should write a letter. A woman at church thinks she should stop reaching out entirely and let the silence do its work. A book she was given says to name her own part and apologize specifically, in writing, without qualifying anything. Somebody at a small group said the word boundaries in a way that made it clear whose she meant. A counselor she saw twice suggested a family session that would require the daughter to attend, which is the entire problem stated as the solution.
That is a hundred strategies, more or less, over four years.
And every one of them has the same thing underneath it, which is a promise nobody can make: that there is a right move, and that if she finds it, the phone rings.
She is sixty six. She does not know how many years this is. Nobody does, and that is the thing that sits on her chest at about four in the morning: not the certainty that it is over, which would at least be a shape, but the not knowing, which has no shape at all.
If that is a phone anybody has under a name they cannot change, come and sit at the table. There is a line in the psalms for exactly this and it is stranger and more useful than the strategies.
They stand aloof from my sore
Here it is. And notice that nothing gets fixed anywhere in that psalm.
My lovers and my friends stand aloof from my sore; and my kinsmen stand afar off.Psalm 38:11
Kinsmen standing afar off. That is the exact word for it: not enemies, not gone, standing at a distance, visible and unreachable at the same time.
And that psalm does not resolve it. There is no verse further down where they come back. The psalm ends with a request for God not to be far off, and the kinsmen are still at a distance when the singing stops.
Scripture kept a song about a distance that never closed inside the book, and had it sung publicly, and no one ever added an ending.
You are inside something Scripture set to music without resolving it, and you were never obliged to produce an ending. Psalm 38:11 leaves the kinsmen standing afar off for the whole length of the song, and the Holy Spirit is the one who preserved a psalm with no reconciliation in it.
That is the permission nobody has given you in four years. Not permission to give up, and not permission to stop sending the birthday text. Permission to be in something that has not closed and might not, without that being a failure of technique.
You have not missed the move, and you were never one strategy away from something you cannot control. Psalm 38:11 names a distance that stays and offers no method for shortening it, and the Spirit of God does not hold a mother responsible for another adult's decision.
Why everybody hands you a method
Now let me protect your sister and the woman at church and even the book, because all of them love you and there are precious few people left.
Here is what happens in another person's head when they hear about an estrangement. They feel the size of it, and it is unbearable, and the mind reaches for the one thing that makes it bearable, which is agency.
If there is a right move, then the world is a place where this sort of thing can be solved. That is a much more comfortable world to stand in.
So they hand you a method, and what they are really doing is holding on to the idea that this is solvable, because the alternative is a world in which a good mother can do everything right and the phone still does not ring, and almost nobody can stand in that world for more than a minute.
The cost is that every method carries a hidden charge, and the charge is that the right thing is out there and has not been found yet.
A hundred of those over four years is a very heavy thing.
Right now, as you read this, you are not four years behind on a solution, and you were never the variable. Psalm 38:11 has a man reporting a distance rather than diagnosing himself, and His Spirit has been at that table on every one of those four in the morning.
Comfort that does not need the phone to ring
Here is the center of it, and it is the discipline this site keeps.
Nothing on this page is going to promise you a reconciliation. I am not going to do it and nobody honest can, because it depends on the free decision of an adult woman who is not in this conversation, and a promise about somebody else's will is not a promise, it is a wish with a Bible verse on it.
And the reason not to do it is not caution. It is that a comfort which depends on the phone ringing is not comfort at all. It is a bet, and every day it does not ring is a day the bet loses, and there have been about fourteen hundred of those days.
So the comfort has to be able to arrive tonight, at that table, with the number still unrung.
And it can, because Scripture never once ties His nearness to a resolved situation. Near to the broken hearted. With thee through the water. Not near to the reconciled. The promise attaches to His presence in it.
You are comforted tonight inside four years of silence, and you were never handed a comfort with a condition on it. Psalm 34:18 puts Him near the broken hearted rather than near the mended ones, and the Holy Spirit does not require a phone call before He will be in a kitchen.
So here is where this leaves you, at a scrubbed table, with the lamp on and the last light going.
The God who is in that kitchen is not conducting a review of your parenting. That is the other thing at four in the morning, and it is worth answering directly: a hundred strategies over four years will quietly convince a woman that she is being assessed.
He is not assessing you. He is the God of a book in which He Himself has children who will not come home, and He is described as standing on a road looking down it, and nothing about that picture is a God who has failed at technique.
And when He came in person, He wept over a city that would not come to Him, and He said so out loud, and He did not blame Himself and He did not force anybody.
You are accompanied at that table by that same Christ, and you were accompanied at four in the morning on every one of those nights. Psalm 38:11 keeps the distance without closing it and Luke 19:41 has Him weeping over a refusal He did not override, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in that kitchen for four years.
And I am not going to tell you the phone rings. Comfort is His to give, in His own way and His own timing, and a silence that is still there next Christmas is not a report on your faith or on what kind of mother you were.
But there is a second weight and it comes off tonight. You have carried an accusation that was never true, that a mother whose daughter will not call has not yet found the right thing to do. Psalm 38 stands in the written word as the permanent answer to it, and the Holy Spirit has never once handed you a method and waited to see whether you would use it properly.
If the weight ever turns dangerous at four in the morning, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the early hours. Getting another human being physically near you is not weakness and it is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a phone.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table, even in a whisper with the house quiet. The authority to speak to what has been sitting on you for four years was given to you in Christ, and it does not rise or fall with how capable you feel tonight. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. And whatever He does with the ache afterward is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.
- Strategies handed to me by people who love me, you are not comfort. Psalm 38:11 says my kinsmen stand afar off and never once offers a method for closing the distance, and I stop treating four years as evidence that I have missed the move.
- Charge that says I have not found it yet, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word keeps a psalm about a distance that never closes and sings it publicly anyway, and the Comforter has never once made me the variable in somebody else's decision.
- Lord, You wept over a city that would not come to You and You did not override it, as Luke 19:41 says. I thank You that You are near the broken hearted and not only the reconciled, and I am saying out loud that I cannot make this happen and that You are here with me in it.
