Comfort That StaysIsaiah 42:3

The Marriage Is Not Coming Back

This message is for a man whose wife of twenty two years remarried in the spring, told by everybody in his family to keep praying for restoration, needing comfort that does not depend on a reversal

She remarried in April. He found out from his daughter, who told him carefully, in a parking lot, because she did not want him to hear it at a party.

Twenty two years. Three kids, all grown. She left four years ago and it was not sudden, and he has gone over it enough times that he has stopped finding anything new in it.

He has not remarried. He is not going to.

And every Sunday, at that long table in his mother's yard, somebody prays for restoration.

Not aggressively. Nobody says a name. It is folded into the blessing over the food, gently, the way his mother does it: Señor, we ask You for restoration in this family, for reconciliation, for what has been broken to be made whole.

Everybody says amen. He says amen.

His aunt has told him three times that she prays for it every night, and she is not being cruel, and she has been praying for that marriage since before it existed.

And here is what happens to him every Sunday between the blessing and the food.

He has to hold two things at once that will not fit in the same hand. The first is that these people love him and are praying out of that love. The second is that his wife is somebody else's wife now, and no amount of prayer at that table is going to change something that a woman decided and a court finalized and a different man stood up in a church for.

And under both of those is the thing he cannot say, which is that every one of those prayers, said kindly, over food, tells him quietly that the version of him sitting at that table is the temporary version. The real one is the one who gets her back.

If that is a Sunday anybody is sitting through, come and sit at the end of the table. There is a line in Isaiah that has been waiting for a man in exactly this seat.

A bruised reed shall he not break

Here it is. It is one of the most tender lines in the prophets and almost nobody applies it to this.

A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench.Isaiah 42:3

Read what the picture actually is.

A bruised reed is a reed that has already been damaged. It is not going to be a whole reed again. It is bent, and the fibers are broken inside it, and anyone who has ever handled one knows it will not straighten out.

And what is promised is not repair. Read it again. He shall not break it.

The promise is that the damaged thing is not going to be finished off. It is not that it gets made new. The verse takes something already bent and says that the one handling it will not snap it, and that is the whole comfort, and it is enormous.

You are held in the exact condition you are in, and you were never promised a straightening as the price of not being broken. Isaiah 42:3 offers a bruised reed protection rather than restoration, and the Holy Spirit is the one who inspired a picture that specific about something that stays bent.

And look at the second half. Smoking flax. That is a wick that has gone out, with a little smoke still coming off it and no flame on it. And what is promised is that it will not be pinched out, which again is not the same as being relit.

Scripture is capable of promising restoration. It does it in plenty of places, about plenty of things. It does not do it here. Here it promises that the damaged thing will be handled gently and will not be discarded, and it stops there on purpose.

You have not been abandoned by the God who did not promise you a repair, and you were never the temporary version of anybody. Isaiah 42:3 is the written word committing to a bent reed as a bent reed, and the Spirit of God is not waiting at that table for a different man to arrive.

The family is praying out of love and it is costing you

Now let me stand up for your mother and your aunt, because you will be at that table on Sunday and this cannot become a wall.

Your aunt has prayed for that marriage since before you had it. In her framework a family is a thing that gets held together by prayer, and stopping praying would feel to her like letting go of you, personally, and she will not do it.

Your mother folds it into the blessing because the blessing is where she puts everything she cannot fix, and she has done that for forty years about everything from your father's back to your cousin's visa.

Neither of them is passing judgment on you. They are doing the only thing they know how to do with a grief that belongs to somebody they love.

And here is the cost, and it is real and it should be named. A prayer for restoration, said in your hearing, week after week, does something to a man's standing in his own family. It makes the present arrangement provisional. It makes him a situation rather than a person.

Both things are true. They love you. It costs you. You do not have to choose one.

Right now, as you read this, you are a whole man at that table rather than a situation being prayed about, and you were never provisional. Isaiah 42:3 commits to the reed in its actual condition, and His Spirit has been at that table with you every Sunday since April.

What is actually not coming back

Now the honest part, and this site exists to say it rather than to walk around it.

She is not coming back. That is not a failure of faith to say out loud; it is a fact with a date and a signature and another man's name on it.

And the marriage is not the only thing that is not coming back. Twenty two years of a particular life is not coming back either: the version of Christmas you used to have, the house the way it was, the way your kids' faces used to look at a table with both of you at it.

None of that reverses. And a comfort that requires it to is not going to be any use at that table on a Sunday, which is why the blessings have been landing the wrong way round.

So the comfort has to be able to sit down beside a thing that is finished. And that is exactly what Isaiah 42 does. It does not say the reed gets straightened. It says the one who is holding it will not break it.

You are held rather than repaired, and you were never asked to wait for a reversal in order to be comforted. Isaiah 42:3 promises the bent thing that it will not be snapped, and the Holy Spirit does not need a marriage restored before He will be in a backyard on a Sunday.

The breakthrough

So here is where this leaves you, at the end of a long table, under a string of lights.

The God who is in that yard is not holding out for a different version of your life before He will sit down in this one. That is the accusation that has been building in you every Sunday between the blessing and the food, and it is not true, and Isaiah 42 is the answer to it.

And when He came in person, He was constantly with people whose situations were not going to be fixed. He sat with a woman at a well who had five marriages behind her and a man who was not her husband, and He did not organize her life before He talked to her. He talked to her about living water, right there, in the middle of the actual arrangement.

You are sat with in your actual life by that same Christ, and you were sat with in the parking lot in April. Isaiah 42:3 promises the bruised reed it will not be broken, John 4:7 has Him beginning a conversation without waiting for a situation to be resolved, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been at that table every Sunday.

And I am not going to tell you the Sundays get easier. Comfort is His to give, in His own way and His own timing, and a table that still costs you next spring is not a report on your faith or on twenty two years.

But there is a second weight and it comes off today. You have carried an idea that was never true, that the man sitting at that table is a temporary arrangement waiting to be corrected. Isaiah 42 stands in the written word as the permanent answer to it, and the Holy Spirit has never once treated you as a situation.

If the weight ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the Sundays. Getting another person physically near you is not a failure of faith and it is not a failure as a father. It is what your family is trying to do, arriving in a form that actually reaches you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the truck, with the engine off and the lights still on in the yard. The authority to speak to what lands on you between the blessing and the food was given to you in Christ, and it does not rise or fall with how steady you feel today. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. And whatever He does with the ache afterward is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.

  1. Prayers being said over a reversal, you are not comfort and you were never asked to be. Isaiah 42:3 promises a bruised reed that it will not be broken and never once promises it will be straightened, and I stop sitting through a blessing as a provisional man.
  2. Idea that I am a situation, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word has the Lord begin a whole conversation with a woman at a well without waiting for her arrangement to be sorted out, and the Comforter has never treated me as a case to be corrected.
  3. Lord, You said the smoking flax You would not quench, as Isaiah 42:3 says, and You did not promise to relight it either. I thank You that You hold what stays bent, and I am saying out loud that this cannot be undone and that You are here in it with me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
