Comfort That Stays2 Corinthians 4:8-9

The Diagnosis Is Not Going to Change

This message is for a man with a progressive diagnosis who is tired of being handed the next treatment and needs somebody to sit down with the version of his life that is actually happening

He has a folder on his phone called Things People Have Sent Me and there are ninety one items in it.

Studies. Clinics in three countries. A supplement. Two different diets. A man in Arizona. A video about a woman who was told she had eighteen months and is now, apparently, hiking. Four different prayer lines. A book, twice, from two different people who do not know each other.

Every single one of those was sent by somebody who loves him.

He is fifty four. The condition is progressive, the name of it does not matter for this, and the honest summary is that the direction is one way and the speed is the only variable. He has had that conversation with three specialists in two years and none of them said anything different from the others.

His wife knows. His neurologist knows. Nobody else really does, because when he says the direction out loud, the sentence never lands. It gets caught, and turned around, and sent back to him as a new option.

And the effect of ninety one items is not encouragement.

The effect is that he now spends a certain amount of every conversation managing somebody else's hope for him. Being gracious about the clinic in Germany. Not saying the thing he actually knows about the supplement. Thanking a woman for the video.

And the version of his life that is actually happening, which is the one with the stick in it and the changes at work and the thing he has stopped being able to do with his hands, does not get discussed with anybody except a neurologist for eleven minutes twice a year.

If that is a waiting room anybody is sitting in, stay right here. There is a sentence in Corinthians that describes this exactly, and it is not the one people quote at you.

Troubled on every side, and not distressed

Here it is. And read it carefully, because it is doing something much stranger than most people notice.

We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.2 Corinthians 4:8-9

Four pairs. And in every single one of them, the first half stays.

He does not say we were troubled and then we were delivered. He says troubled on every side, and then, in the same breath, not distressed. The trouble is not removed. It is still on every side. What is added is that it does not do the thing it would otherwise do.

Perplexed but not in despair. He is still perplexed. Nothing has been explained to him. Cast down but not destroyed. He is still down.

That is a description of survival inside a situation that has not changed, and it is one of the most honest sentences in the New Testament.

You are described by that verse rather than contradicted by it, and you were never promised the removal of the first half. 2 Corinthians 4:8 keeps trouble on every side in the same sentence as not distressed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who inspired a description of endurance rather than a promise of rescue.

Nobody who sent you one of those ninety one items is working from this verse. They are working from a picture where faith reaches for the reversal, and Paul, writing about his own body, gives a different picture entirely: a man held together inside a thing that is not going away.

You have been living inside the biblical shape already, and you were never falling short of a promise nobody made. 2 Corinthians 4:9 says cast down but not destroyed rather than lifted up and set right, and the Spirit of God is not standing in that waiting room with a ninety second option.

What the ninety one items are for

Now let me stand up for those people, because they are your people and you are going to need them for a long time.

Nobody sends a clinic in Germany out of a suspicion that not enough has been tried. They send it out of love, and because the alternative to sending something is sitting with a fact about a friend's body that they cannot bear.

An option is a place to put fear. That is what it is. It is not really addressed to your condition; it is addressed to theirs.

And that means the folder on your phone is, in a strange way, a record of ninety one people being frightened for you. It is not a record of ninety one people doubting you or lecturing you.

That does not make it easier to receive. It was never going to. What it does is stop the folder becoming a grievance, which would cost a man the only network he has.

Keep them. Every one. And stop carrying the job of managing their hope, because that job was never assigned to you and it is taking energy you do not have to spare.

Right now, as you read this, you are not required to be the one who protects everybody else from your diagnosis, and you were never given that job. 2 Corinthians 4:8 describes a man carrying his own condition rather than everybody's feelings about it, and His Spirit has been in that folder with you every time it opened.

Sitting with the version that is happening

Here is the center of this, and it is the whole reason the page exists.

There is a version of your life that is actually happening. It has a stick in it. It has a set of things that used to be automatic and are now decisions. It has a direction.

Almost nobody will sit down with that version. They will sit down with the version where a clinic works.

And what the Gospel offers is not the clinic. It is somebody who sits down with the actual version.

Look at how He does it. He goes to a pool where a man has been lying for thirty eight years and He asks him a question first. He asks a blind man what he wants. He stops in a crowd for a woman who had spent everything she had on physicians and was nothing better, and He does not hurry her, He makes her tell the whole thing in front of everybody.

He is not in a rush to get past the condition to the outcome. He engages the actual situation as it stands.

You are met in the version that is happening, and you were never asked to be somewhere further along the road. Mark 5:26 has Him stopping in a crowd for a woman who had been through every physician and got worse, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a better scan before He will sit down.

The breakthrough

So here is where this leaves you, in a waiting room, with a half done jigsaw on the table.

The God who is in that room does not need the diagnosis to change before He will be company. That is worth saying plainly, because two years of ninety one options can quietly train a man to believe that God is on the side of the reversal and is therefore not much interested in the actual Tuesday.

He is interested in the actual Tuesday. That is nearly the whole message of the Gospels: a God who came into a body, and got tired in it, and thirsted in it, and had it broken.

And Paul, writing that verse about being troubled on every side, is describing a body that had been beaten, shipwrecked, stoned and worn out, and he is not writing from the far side of it. He is writing from inside it.

You are accompanied inside the actual version by that same Christ, and you were accompanied in every one of those eleven minute appointments. 2 Corinthians 4:8 describes endurance inside a thing that stays, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in that waiting room every time you have sat in it.

And I am not going to tell you the direction changes. Comfort is His to give, in His own way and His own timing, and a condition that is exactly the same next year is not a report on your faith or on how well you have handled any of it.

But there is a second weight and it comes off today. You have carried an accusation that was never true, that a man who has stopped looking for the next option has given up on God. 2 Corinthians 4 stands in the written word as the permanent answer to it, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a reversal in order to sit down.

If the weight ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about how it actually is. Getting another human being physically near you is not weakness and it is not a failure of faith. It is the exact thing ninety one people were reaching for and could not find the shape of.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car, before the drive home. The authority to speak to what has been landing on you for two years was given to you in Christ, and it does not rise or fall with how strong you feel today. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. And whatever He does with the ache afterward is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.

  1. Next thing somebody found on the internet, you are not comfort. 2 Corinthians 4:8 says troubled on every side yet not distressed and leaves the trouble exactly where it is, and I put down the job of managing everybody's hope for me.
  2. Accusation that I have given up, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word has an apostle describe being cast down and not destroyed from inside the thing rather than from the far side of it, and the Comforter has never once needed a better scan.
  3. Lord, You stopped in a crowd for a woman who had been to every physician and only got worse, as Mark 5:26 says. I thank You that You engage the version that is actually happening, and I am saying out loud that this cannot be undone and that You are here in it with me.
