He has stopped telling people. That is the actual subject of this, and it took him about a year to notice he was doing it.
The house went in March. Not a family sale, not a decision anybody made around a table. It went the way these things go, through paperwork and a court and a set of circumstances that took four years and that he has explained to about sixty people and will not explain again.
His grandfather built the back rooms. His father was born in the front one. There is a mark on a door frame with four sets of heights on it in three different handwritings.
Somebody else lives there now. They have painted the gate.
And here is what happens every single time he tells somebody.
They say something. And every single thing they say assumes a door is still open.
Have you thought about writing to them. There might be a way to buy it back in time. Maybe when the market turns. My cousin got something like this reversed. Nothing is impossible with the Lord, and He knows what that house means to you.
Every one of those is offered in love. Not one of them is offered by a person who is lying. They are trying to hand him a way to keep hoping, because in their experience hope is what a person needs.
But the door is not open. He knows the paperwork better than any of them. There is no version of this. And so what actually happens, every time, is that he has to either argue with somebody kind or nod and let a false thing stand, and both of those cost him something, and the cheaper option is silence.
So he has stopped saying it. And now nobody in his life knows that the thing at the center of him has not moved in a year and a half.
If that is a silence anybody is keeping, sit down here. There is a line in Lamentations for a man in exactly this position.
Our inheritance is turned to strangers
Here it is. It is one line, and it is the flattest sentence in the whole book, and it is exactly the fact of it.
Our inheritance is turned to strangers, our houses to aliens.Lamentations 5:2
Read what it does not do. It does not add a clause about getting it back. It does not attach a promise about the market or the paperwork or a future generation. It states the position, in the present tense, and moves on to the next line.
And that is the whole book. Five chapters of loss stated accurately, with no reversal offered anywhere in the text, and the one hopeful passage sitting in the middle of it like a lamp rather than like an ending. The book closes on a question and does not answer it.
That book is in the Bible. It is read publicly. It has never once been considered a failure of faith.
You are standing exactly where the written word stands, and you were never faithless for knowing the paperwork. Lamentations 5:2 is Scripture naming an inheritance in somebody else's hands with no clause attached, and the Holy Spirit is the one who left that line without a promise bolted onto the end of it.
That is the permission you have been needing for a year and a half. Not permission to be sad. Permission to be accurate.
You have been telling the truth rather than giving up, and you were never obliged to hold a door open that is shut. Lamentations 5 states the position plainly and Scripture kept it that way, and the Spirit of God is not asking a man to pretend about a court file.
Why everybody hands you a door
Now let me protect those sixty people, because they are your people and you are going to need them.
When somebody hears about a loss that cannot be reversed, something in them cannot hold it. That is not a character flaw, it is close to universal. So the mind reaches for the nearest exit, and the nearest exit is a possibility.
Maybe. One day. My cousin got something like this reversed.
Those are not lies. They are handholds. The person offering it is holding on to it themselves while they hand it over, because a world in which the house is simply gone is a harder world for them to stand in too.
That is why it happens every time and why it will keep happening.
And notice what it costs, because this is the actual mechanism of the loneliness. A false door handed over can either be taken, which means agreeing to a hope that is not there, or declined, which makes a man the difficult one. Both of those isolate. So silence gets chosen instead, and silence isolates too, and there is no third option among human beings who cannot bear the fact.
There is a third option, and it is not among human beings.
Right now, as you read this, you are with one who never once hands you a door that is not there, and you were never required to accept a false hope to be accompanied. Lamentations 5:2 declines to offer a reversal, and His Spirit has been in that apartment for a year and a half without a single maybe.
Comfort that does not need it back
Here is the center of it, and it is the reason this page exists.
There is a kind of comfort that is really a negotiation. It says: feel better, because it might change. That comfort has a condition inside it, and the condition is the future.
The comfort in Scripture does not work that way.
Look at what is actually promised. Near to the broken hearted. With thee through the waters. I will not leave thee comfortless. Not one of those says the water will be drained. The promise attaches to His presence in the situation, and it is offered while the situation stands.
That is the only kind of comfort that is any use to a man whose house is painted a different color now. Everything else is a bet, and a bet is not a comfort, it is a distraction with a due date on it.
You are comforted inside a thing that stays, and you were never handed a comfort with a condition on it. Isaiah 43:2 puts Him with a man in the water rather than promising dry ground, and the Holy Spirit does not require a court file to be reopened before He will be in a kitchen.
So here is where this leaves you, in a small kitchen, with tea going cold.
The God who is in that room is not offering the house back. He has not, and this page is not going to either, because the moment anybody does that it becomes another handhold, and there have been sixty of those already.
What He offers is Himself, in the apartment, at the table, in the position as it actually is.
And He knows the position. When He came here He had nowhere to lay His head. He was born in a borrowed room and buried in a borrowed tomb and He had no house of His own at any point, which is a strange fact that almost nobody notices, and it means the Lord of the whole earth spent His entire ministry as a man without a door frame with heights marked on it.
You are accompanied by that same Christ in a rented kitchen, and you were accompanied in March when the gate got painted. Lamentations 5:2 names the inheritance turned to strangers, Matthew 8:20 has Him with nowhere to lay His head, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been at that table for a year and a half.
And I will not tell you the ache lifts. Comfort is His to give, in His own way and His own timing, and a loss that is still at the center of you next spring is not a report on your faith or on how well you have handled it.
But there is a second weight and it comes off tonight. You have carried an accusation that was never true, that a man who will not hold a door open has given up on God. Lamentations stands in the written word as the permanent answer to it, and the Holy Spirit has never once made a false hope the price of company.
If the weight ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about it. Getting another human being physically near you is not weakness and it is not a failure of faith. It is one honest way of refusing to be alone with a thing you have stopped telling people about.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table, with the door shut. The authority to speak to what has been sitting in the middle of you was given to you in Christ, and it does not rise or fall with how hopeful you sound tonight. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. And whatever He does with the ache afterward is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.
- Assumption that it can be got back, you are not comfort and you were never asked to be. Lamentations 5:2 says our inheritance is turned to strangers with no clause attached at all, and I stop paying for silence in order to avoid arguing with kind people.
- Verdict that says accuracy is giving up, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word states a loss plainly and closes that book on an unanswered question, and the Comforter has never once required a false door to be held open.
- Lord, You had nowhere to lay Your head, as Matthew 8:20 says, and You were born in a borrowed room. I thank You that You come into the position as it is, and I am saying out loud that it cannot be undone and that You are here in it with me.
