The Verse They Quoted Wrong

The repast was in the fellowship hall and it went on until four, and by the end of it she had heard the same verse four times.

Except it was not the verse. That is what she cannot let go of, and it has been three weeks, and it is a strange thing to be caught on when your sister is dead.

Her sister was thirty eight. A car came across the median on a Thursday afternoon on a road they had both driven a thousand times.

And at the repast, four separate people, at four separate points between the ham and the folding chairs going back, said a version of the same thing to her. Everything happens for a reason. All things work together for good. God has a plan in this. One of them added, gently, that she would understand it later.

They were quoting Romans. All four of them thought they were.

And she knows that chapter. She has taught that chapter to teenagers. She sat there in the fellowship hall with a paper cup in her hand knowing exactly what Paul wrote and exactly what he did not write, and she could not say a word, because what kind of woman corrects the Greek at her own sister's repast.

So she said thank you four times and she stacked chairs afterward, which is what she does, and she drove home.

And the thing that is sitting on her now is not really the misquote. It is that four people who love her looked at her and reached for a sentence to make the accident make sense, and not one of them sat down.

If that is a fellowship hall anybody has stacked chairs in, this is going to be worth your time, because I am going to give you the chapter properly and then I am going to give you the verse they should have used.

What that chapter says and what it never said

Let me be precise, because precision is a kindness here.

Romans 8:28 says that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose. That is what is on the page.

Now hear what is not on the page, and hear it as a teacher rather than as somebody scoring a point.

It does not say all things are good. It says they work together, which is a sentence about God's activity and not a description of the things themselves. A car crossing a median is not good. Paul never said it was, and nobody who reads that verse carefully has ever thought he did.

It does not say you will understand it later. There is no clause about comprehension anywhere in the sentence.

And it does not say everything happens for a reason. That phrase is not in the Bible at all, in any translation, in any book. It is a proverb that has attached itself to a verse the way a barnacle attaches to a hull.

So the woman with the paper cup is not being difficult. She is being accurate.

You are standing on the text and not against it, and you were never in rebellion for refusing a sentence that is not in the book. Romans 8:28 is the written word doing something far more careful than what was handed to you, and the Holy Spirit who inspired it is not offended by a woman who reads it properly.

The verse they should have used is four chapters along

Here is the one nobody quoted at that repast, and it is the one that had their instructions in it.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.Romans 12:15

Same letter. Same author. Four chapters on from the verse everybody reached for.

And look at what it asks. Not explain to them that weep. Not encourage them that weep. Not remind them that weep. Weep with them, which is an instruction to get down into the same water, and it is the only instruction Paul gives about what to do with a grieving person.

Notice also what he does not do. He does not attach a condition. He does not say weep with them until they have accepted it, or weep with them and then explain 8:28. He puts the whole obligation in one verb and stops.

You have been asking for the thing Scripture commands, and you were never asking for something soft. Romans 12:15 is the written word putting weeping alongside a mourner as an actual apostolic instruction, and the Spirit of God is the one who breathed that sentence into the same letter as the one everybody misremembers.

That is worth sitting with, because it reframes the whole afternoon. Four people gave a sentence out of chapter eight that they got slightly wrong. What chapter twelve asked them for was a chair.

You are owed the chair by the plain reading of the letter, and you were never asking for more than the apostle asked for. Romans 12:15 is the written word making company the instruction rather than the extra, and the Holy Spirit inspired that verb in the same breath as the one everybody remembers.

Doctrine you can dance to is still doctrine you can sit down with

Now let me protect those four, because you are going to see them at the eleven o'clock service and I will not have you carrying anything into that room.

A grieving woman standing in a fellowship hall is one of the most exposed situations a church person ever faces. They have thirty seconds. They cannot fix a car on a median. They love you and they have nothing in their hands.

So they reached for the biggest true thing they own, and they got the wording a little wrong on the way, which is what happens to all of us under pressure.

That is not doctrine being weaponized. That is doctrine being clung to by people who are also frightened.

Keep all four of them. Keep the ham and the folding chairs and the woman who added the bit about understanding it later. And take the misquote off your shoulder and leave it in the hall.

Right now, as you read this, you are held by a God who has never once asked you to agree with a proverb before He would come near. Romans 12:15 tells the church to weep with you rather than instruct you, and His Spirit has been sitting with you in that car on every drive home since the Thursday.
