The Tea That Was Not a Lecture

This message is for a man whose brother died in the spring, whose relatives fill the courtyard every evening with meanings for it, and who needs one cup poured by somebody with nothing to say

The courtyard fills at about seven. It has filled at seven every evening since the spring, and he is grateful for it, and he has begun to dread it, and both of those are true at the same time.

His brother died in April. Forty one years old. There was nothing anyone could have done and everybody has told him so, which is the beginning of the problem rather than the end of it.

Here is the shape of an evening. His cousin arrives first and says something about the shortness of a life, and it is a good thought, and it is a thought. Then the neighbor from the corner house, who says the thing about how the young are taken and it is the older ones who should worry, and laughs a little to soften it. Then his uncle, who has an entire framework, delivered slowly, with pauses in it, about what a family is for.

The tea goes round. The glasses come back. Somebody refills. Somebody else says something meaningful.

And he sits there, in his own courtyard, on his own chair, under his own olive tree, and he is more alone at half past eight with eleven people around him than he was at four in the afternoon by himself.

He has tried to work out what he wants instead, and he cannot name it, which makes him think it is unreasonable.

It is not unreasonable. It has a name and the name is company.

What he wants is for one of them to walk in, pour the tea, sit down, and say nothing at all. Not a short thing. Not a wise short thing. Nothing. And then to stay anyway, for an hour, and go home without having improved him.

He has not said this to anybody because it would sound like a complaint about people who came, and they did come, and coming is not nothing. So he says thank you at the gate every night and washes eleven glasses and stands in the dark kitchen with his hands in the water.

If that is a kitchen anybody recognizes, this next part is worth reading slowly.

Scripture asks for pity, not for a framework

There is a line in the book of Job that I want in front of you, because it settles something that a grieving man will otherwise argue with himself about for months.

To him that is afflicted pity should be shewed from his friend.Job 6:14

Read what it asks for. Not counsel. Not perspective. Not a framework about what a family is for. Pity, in the old strong sense of the word: to be moved with the thing rather than positioned above it.

That is the obligation Scripture actually lays on a friend, and it is the only one. Everything the courtyard has been offering is a substitute, and most of it is a good-hearted substitute, but a substitute is what it is.

So put down the idea that has been forming in the dark kitchen, the one that says a real man of faith would be nourished by all that wisdom. You are not ungrateful, and you were never obliged to be fed by a framework. Job 6:14 is the written word naming what a grieving man is owed, and the Holy Spirit put that word into the book long before your uncle arrived at your gate with his.

Notice who is speaking, as well. It is Job, in the middle of it, on the ash heap, telling his friends to their faces what he needs from them. Scripture did not clean that up. It kept the request in.

You have permission from the book itself to want the sitting instead of the sense. That is not weakness dressed as theology; it is Job 6:14 read as it stands, and the Spirit who preserved it does not think less of a man for wanting what the verse asks for.

What God actually does in a room like that

Now the thing that changes the weight of the evening, and it is about the character of God rather than the character of your cousins.

The God of Scripture is a host before He is a teacher. He spreads a table. He anoints a head with oil. He makes a cup run over. That is not decoration in the psalm; that is the posture He is described in when the valley is at its darkest. He does not stand at the head of the table explaining the valley. He pours.

And when He came in person, He came into houses. That is worth noticing for a man who is tired of his own courtyard. He ate with people constantly. He went to a wedding. He cooked fish on a shore at dawn for men who had failed Him and He did not open with a lesson, He opened with breakfast.

There is a moment at a grave in Bethany that is the whole of it. He knew what He was about to do. He knew the outcome, entirely. And He wept first, with the sisters, in front of everybody, before He did a single useful thing.

You are hosted by that same God tonight, and you were hosted by Him on every evening this spring that ended with your hands in the water. The written word puts Him at a table in the valley rather than at a lectern above it, and His Spirit is the one who keeps that psalm true in a kitchen at half past eleven.

That is why the evenings have been leaving you empty even though the courtyard is full. The courtyard has been offering meaning. What you are made for, and what He offers, is company.

The ones who talked, and the one who did not

I will not let this become a case against your relatives, because you would pay for that and they would not.

Consider what those eleven people are doing. Each of them walks through a gate into a house where a forty one year old man is missing. That is a terrible thing to look at without something in your hands. So they carry in a sentence, the way a man carries in a dish, because arriving empty-handed feels impossible.

Their sentences are not an attack on you. They are the sound of eleven people frightened by the size of your loss and unwilling to leave you alone in it.

Keep the people. Set the sentences on the table with the glasses and leave them there.

There is one more thing under this, and it is the hardest to say plainly. What the courtyard cannot give you, because no courtyard can, is the one thing you actually want, which is your brother in the chair by the wall. Nobody in that gate has that in their hands. Some of the talking is simply the sound of people knowing it.

You are known all the way down by the One who is in the courtyard after the gate closes, and you have never once had to explain the ache to Him. Job 6:14 says what a friend owes an afflicted man, and the Spirit of God is the friend who has kept the terms of it every night since April.

The breakthrough

So here is where this leaves you, on a warm night, with eleven glasses drying beside the sink.

The God who is with you does not arrive with a framework. He arrives the way a friend arrives: without an agenda, without a lesson, and without any need for the evening to conclude.

That is not a soft idea. It is the specific claim of the Gospel, that He did not send down an explanation from a safe distance, He came into a house in a small country and sat at tables with people whose lives had gone wrong, and He wept at a graveside He was standing right beside.

You are sat with tonight by the same Christ who wept in Bethany, and you were sat with on the nights when the courtyard emptied early. Job 6:14 names the debt every friend owes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a first-century evening present at your table.

And I will not tell you the ache lifts before you sleep. Comfort belongs to Him, and He gives it in His own way and His own timing, and an ache that stays tonight is not a report on your faith or your gratitude.

What comes off tonight is the second weight, and that one is yours to set down. You have carried an accusation that was never true, that a man unmoved by eleven kind sentences must be hard, or proud, or short of faith. Job 6:14 stands in the written word as the permanent answer to it, and the Spirit who inspired the verse is not waiting at your gate for you to be more teachable.

If any of this ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the truth about the nights. Getting another person physically near you is not a failure of faith. It is the same thing Job asked his friends for out loud, and it is the whole subject of this page.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the courtyard, with the gate shut. The authority to speak to what has been sitting on your chest was given to you in Christ, and it does not depend on how steady your voice is tonight. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. And whatever He does with the ache after you have spoken is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.

  1. Meanings stacked around my courtyard, you are not friendship and you were never asked to be. Job 6:14 says that pity is what a friend owes an afflicted man, and I stop apologizing for needing company instead of counsel.
  2. Fear that I have grown hard, get out in the name of Jesus. The written word kept Job's request in the book and never called it unbelief, and the Comforter is not standing at my gate waiting for me to be more teachable.
  3. Lord, You are a host before You are a teacher, and Psalm 23:5 says You spread a table in the valley itself. I thank You that You pour and do not lecture, and I am sitting down with You now.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
