Carried ThroughPsalm 56:8

The Birthday That Is Not Happening

This message is for a teenager whose sister's eighteenth birthday lands on a Thursday next month, bracing since the calendar turned and with no idea what she is supposed to do with the day

The nineteenth is a Thursday and she has known that since the calendar turned in January, which was eleven weeks ago.

Her sister would be eighteen. Was going to be eighteen. She has not worked out which tense to use and it is one of about forty small things about this that nobody warns you about.

They had planned it, back when. Not seriously, but they had talked about it enough times that it exists: the driving test in the morning, a thing at the lake, a stupid cake her sister wanted with a specific ridiculous decoration on it that they had both agreed was hilarious.

The lake is still there. The bakery is still there. The nineteenth is coming whether anybody plans anything or not, and that is the thing about a date. You cannot decline it. It arrives.

Her mother has not mentioned it. Not once in eleven weeks. She does not know whether that means her mother has forgotten, which is impossible, or whether her mother is doing the same thing she is doing, which is far more likely, which is standing very still and hoping the other one brings it up first.

Her friends do not know it is coming. Why would they. It is not their date.

And so what she has been doing since about the second week of January is bracing. Every time she sees a calendar. Every time somebody says a date out loud in class. There is a particular feeling in her chest when somebody says the word Thursday, and she has started to notice it, and she cannot say any of this to anybody.

If that is a date anybody is bracing for, sit down here on the floor. There is a verse in the psalms about exactly this, and the surprising thing about it is who is doing the counting.

Somebody has already written it down

Here it is, and the picture in it is stranger and more careful than most people notice.

Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?Psalm 56:8

Three things in one verse and every one of them is a record being kept.

Thou tellest my wanderings. Tellest is an old word for counting. Every step of a person going back and forth, tallied.

Put my tears into thy bottle. That is a specific practice from the ancient world, a small vessel for collecting something that would otherwise be lost, and the psalmist asks God to treat his crying as the kind of thing you would go to the trouble of keeping.

Are they not in thy book. Written down. Dated.

You are already in a record somebody else is keeping, and you were never carrying the nineteenth by yourself. Psalm 56:8 has God counting steps and keeping tears in a book with dates in it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who put a verse about record keeping into a song written by a man who was frightened.

That matters for a girl who has been bracing alone for eleven weeks, and here is exactly why. Bracing is a thing you do when nobody else knows a date is coming. It is the specific loneliness of holding a calendar by yourself.

And the verse says the calendar is already in somebody else's hands.

You have not been the only one holding that Thursday, and you were never eleven weeks into this on your own. Psalm 56:8 puts the record in God's keeping rather than in yours, and the Spirit of God has known the nineteenth for longer than the calendar has.

Nobody is going to tell you how to spend it

Now here is the part that this page is not going to do, and I want it said plainly because everything else out there will do it.

Nobody gets to tell you how to spend the nineteenth.

There is a whole industry of advice about this. Light a candle. Do her favorite thing. Release something. Write her a letter. Go to the lake. Definitely do not go to the lake. Make it a celebration of her life. Take the day off. Absolutely do not take the day off, keep busy.

Every one of those is somebody's experience being handed over as an instruction, and none of them is Scripture, and there is not one verse anywhere in the Bible about how to mark the anniversary of a death.

So if the nineteenth arrives and you go to school and do nothing and tell no one and get in bed at nine, that is not a failure. If you go to the lake and cannot get out of the car, that is not a failure either. There is no correct version of that day and nobody is grading it.

You are not being assessed on that Thursday, and you were never given a right way to do it. Nothing in the written word prescribes how a person marks a date, and the Holy Spirit is not standing at the nineteenth with a checklist.

Two small things that actually help

Now, having said nobody can tell you how to spend it, there are two things I would ask you to consider, and neither one is about the day itself.

The first is: plan one thing in advance. Not a big thing. One small concrete thing, decided now, in March, while things are calm, so that the nineteenth does not arrive as a blank space. A blank space on a hard date is the worst version, because the whole day gets spent deciding.

It can be tiny. Getting a specific coffee. Sitting somewhere for ten minutes. Watching one particular thing. It does not have to be about her and it does not have to be meaningful.

The second is harder and it is the one that actually changes the day: tell one person it is coming.

One. Not the whole friend group and not a speech. One person, in advance, told plainly: the nineteenth is my sister's birthday and I am not looking forward to it.

That is the sentence. That is all of it.

Because the difference between a hard day and an unbearable one is almost never the day. It is whether one other human being on earth knows what the date is.

You are allowed to say the date out loud to somebody, and you were never obliged to carry a calendar in private. Psalm 56:8 has a man handing his own record over to God rather than keeping it to himself, and the Spirit is at work in a sentence said to one friend in advance.

The breakthrough

So here is where this leaves you, on a bedroom floor, eleven weeks out.

God is already on the nineteenth. He is not going to arrive there when you do. He is not waiting to see how you handle it.

That is what the verse about the bottle and the book is really saying. This is not a day being walked toward alone with a private calendar. It is a day already written down somewhere else, by somebody who was there when it was her actual birthday and who will be there on the one that is not.

And when He came in person, He knew the date of the worst day of His own life, in advance, for a long time, and He said so out loud to His friends more than once, and on the night before it He asked three of them to stay awake with Him.

He knows exactly what bracing is.

You are accompanied toward that Thursday by that same Christ, and you were accompanied on every day since the calendar turned. Psalm 56:8 has your tears counted and dated in His book, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been in that bedroom for eleven weeks.

And I am not going to tell you the day goes well. Comfort is His to give, in His own way and His own timing, and a nineteenth that turns out to be terrible is not a verdict on your faith or on how much you loved her.

But there is a second weight and it comes off today. You have carried an accusation that was never true, that a girl who is dreading a birthday is doing grief wrong. Psalm 56 stands in the written word as the permanent answer to it, and the Holy Spirit is not standing on the nineteenth with a list of things you should have done.

If any of it ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor, a counselor or one adult you trust the honest truth. Getting another person physically near you is not weakness and it is not a failure of faith. It is the whole point of this page arriving in a body.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your room, with the door shut. The authority to speak to what has been coming at you since January was given to you in Christ, and it does not rise or fall with how strong you feel today. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. And whatever He does with the ache afterward is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.

  1. Thursday coming toward me, you are not mine to survive alone. Psalm 56:8 says my tears are in His bottle and my wanderings are counted in His book, and I stop bracing for the nineteenth as though nobody else has it written down.
  2. Rule about how to spend that day, get out in the name of Jesus. There is not one verse in the written word about how to mark a date like this, and the Comforter is not standing on the nineteenth with a checklist.
  3. Lord, You knew the date of Your own worst day in advance and You asked three friends to stay awake with You, as Matthew 26:38 says. I thank You that You are already on the nineteenth, and I am telling one person and planning one thing.
