It is the twelfth, and it is a Tuesday, and there is a concrete pour booked for that morning that has been on the schedule since August.
His daughter died on the twelfth of that month last year. She was nine.
Nobody on that site knows. That is not an accident and it is not shame. He started on this job in February and it was the first thing since, and he made a decision on the first morning in the parking area that he was going to be a man who works here rather than a man that something happened to, and that decision has been the only thing holding the last six months together.
So there are eleven men on that crew and not one of them knows he had a daughter.
They know he does not drink with them on a Friday. They know he takes his lunch in the truck. They think he is quiet, and one of them has decided he is unfriendly, and that is a price he has been willing to pay.
And now the twelfth is a Tuesday with a pour on it.
He has thought about calling in. He has thought about it about forty times. And every version of that goes the same way: he calls in, and then he is at home, in the house, on that day, with the whole of it and nothing to hold on to, and by nine in the morning he would be somewhere he cannot come back from easily.
So he is going to go to work. He has known that for weeks.
What he does not know is how to be inside eight hours on a site with a pour on it and eleven men who have no idea, on the worst day of the year, without anything at all to lean on.
If that is a Tuesday anybody has coming, sit down on the tailgate. There is a verse in Isaiah for exactly this, and the key word in it is about being held up rather than about being told anything.
I will uphold thee
Here it is, and read the last verb.
Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.Isaiah 41:10
Uphold. Hold up. Keep from going down.
That is a physical word, and it is deliberate. The verse could have said comfort or console or teach. It says uphold, which is what you do to something that would otherwise fall, and it names the instrument: the right hand.
That is the promise for eight hours on a site. It is not a promise that the day will be explained or that anybody will notice or that the pour will go well. It is a promise about a hand under a man.
You are upheld through those eight hours, and you were never holding yourself up on that site. Isaiah 41:10 promises a right hand under a man rather than an explanation in front of him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who chose a physical word for a physical day.
And notice the order of the three verbs, because it goes somewhere. Strengthen. Help. Uphold. It moves from adding something to a man, to coming alongside a man, to simply keeping him from going down.
That third one is the one for the twelfth. Not a good day. Not a strong day. A day at the end of which a man is still standing, and the reason is not him.
You have not been keeping yourself upright since February, and you were never the thing doing the holding. Isaiah 41:10 makes upholding His own act with His own hand, and the Spirit of God has been on that site every day since the first morning in the parking area.
You do not have to tell them
Now let me deal with the eleven men, because somebody somewhere is going to tell you that you should be honest with your crew and that carrying it alone is pride.
That is not true and it is not the Bible.
There is no verse anywhere requiring a man to disclose his grief to his workplace. Nothing in Scripture obliges anybody to hand their worst thing to eleven men they have known since February.
The decision you made in the parking area on your first morning was not denial. It was a man building somewhere to stand. Being a man who works here rather than a man that something happened to is not a lie; it is a room where a specific weight is not being carried, and a man who has no such room does not survive six months.
Keep it. And keep taking your lunch in the truck if that is what the truck is for.
You are not obliged to explain yourself to a job site, and you were never proud for keeping one room clear. Nothing in the written word requires disclosure to anybody, and the Holy Spirit is not standing on that site waiting for you to be more open with a crew.
But there is a difference between the crew and one person, and that is the next part.
One person, and one thing
Here is what I would ask, and it is small and it is specific.
The first: decide one thing about the twelfth now, in advance. Not the work question. One small concrete thing for that day, chosen while the week is still steady. Ten minutes in the truck at the gate before the shift. A particular place on the way home. Something so that the day is not entirely made of a pour and eleven men.
The second: tell one person, and it does not have to be anybody from that site.
One person, outside all of it. Your brother. An old friend two states away. Somebody at a church you go to twice a year. Told plainly, in advance: the twelfth is a year since my daughter and I am working that day.
That is the whole sentence.
And the reason is not therapeutic. It is that the difference between eight hours and eight unbearable hours is almost never the hours. It is whether one human being on the surface of the earth knows what the day is while you are inside it.
You are allowed one person who knows, and you were never meant to be inside a Tuesday with nobody on earth aware of it. Isaiah 41:10 has God announcing the company out loud rather than leaving a man to assume it, and the Spirit is at work in a sentence sent to one person the night before.
So here is where this leaves you, on a tailgate, with a pour booked for the twelfth.
The God who is on that site does not need the crew to know. He is not waiting for anybody to be more open, and He is not less present because a man in a hard hat has drawn the wrong conclusion.
What He is doing is the thing that verse names: a hand underneath, on the day, for the whole eight hours, whether or not one single human being on that job is aware of anything.
And when He came in person He was a man on a work site for most of His life. Twenty years or so with tools in His hands before He said a public word. He knows exactly what it is to be inside an ordinary working day carrying something nobody around Him could see.
You are upheld on that Tuesday by that same Christ, and you were upheld on the twelfth last year in real time. Isaiah 41:10 puts the right hand under a man rather than an explanation in front of him, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been on that site since the first morning.
And I am not going to tell you the day goes well. Comfort is His to give, in His own way and His own timing, and a twelfth that is unbearable is not a report on your faith or on how well you have held six months together.
But there is a second weight and it comes off tonight. You have carried an accusation that was never true, that a man who does not tell his crew is hiding from God as well as from them. Isaiah 41 stands in the written word as the permanent answer to it, and the Holy Spirit has never once required disclosure before He would put a hand under somebody.
If the weight ever turns dangerous, and staying safe genuinely comes into question for you, call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the plain truth about the twelfth. Getting another human being physically near you is not weakness and it is not a failure of the decision you made in that parking area. It is the right hand of Isaiah 41 arriving with a face on it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the truck, before you turn the key. The authority to speak to what is coming on the twelfth was given to you in Christ, and it does not rise or fall with how strong you feel this week. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it. And whatever He does with the ache afterward is His to decide, in His own way and His own timing.
- Eight hours nobody on that site knows about, you are not mine to carry alone. Isaiah 41:10 promises a right hand upholding a man rather than an explanation in front of him, and I stop treating the twelfth as something I have to hold up by myself.
- Rule that says I owe my crew the truth, get out in the name of Jesus. There is nothing in the written word requiring a man to hand his worst thing to eleven men he met in February, and the Comforter is not on that site waiting for me to be more open.
- Lord, You worked with tools in Your hands for twenty years before You said a public word, as Mark 6:3 says of the carpenter. I thank You that You know an ordinary working day with something in it nobody can see, and I am telling one person and planning one small thing.
