The Last Dish Goes Back

This message is for the widow returning the last three washed casserole dishes to the church hall kitchen, where the women who fed her are already cooking for somebody else's door, who needs to know she is still accompanied in the part nobody is watching

Three casserole dishes, washed, dried, stacked, the masking tape labels peeled off and rolled into a ball in her coat pocket, and she is carrying them into the church hall kitchen after the service like a woman returning library books.

The kitchen is loud. The urn is going and the women who fed her are at the sink and the counter and the cupboard, and they are talking about the family on Whitfield Road, the young dad, the ambulance on Tuesday, who is doing Thursday, whether the children eat fish. A schedule is being built out of kindness in front of her, the same one that once had her name at the top of it. She sets the dishes down. Somebody says oh love, you didn't have to, and somebody else says which one is mine, and nobody can remember, and they laugh, and she laughs, and it is a real laugh.

That is the thing. She is not angry with them. They did what they said they would do and they did it well and they did it for weeks, and now there is another door on another street and the meals have gone there, and that is right. She would send them there herself. Nobody has done anything wrong.

And it is worse now than it was then. Then, there was a knock at six and a dish with a name on it and a woman standing in the hallway not knowing what to say and staying anyway. Now the freezer is empty and the phone is quiet and the house has stopped being a place people come to. The part that hurts most has arrived precisely as the company left, and it turns out this is the part nobody was ever going to be watching, because nobody can.

You are the one setting the dishes down. Your name has come off the top of a schedule that is still running, and it is running for somebody who needs it, and you would not take it back, and the house is very quiet tonight. That is where I want to sit with you. Not in the weeks with the knock at the door. Here, in the part nobody sees.

The part nobody was ever going to see

Let me name it plainly before I say anything about God, because a comfort that arrives before the ache has been named is not comfort, it is a hurry. The meals stopped. The messages stopped. People went back to their lives, which is what lives are for, and you were left holding a grief that had only just found its full weight. It is heavier now than it was at the start, and nobody told you that would happen, and if you say it out loud people look worried, so you have stopped saying it. That is real. That is not a failure of gratitude and it is not a stage you should have passed. It is simply where you are.

Now hear what I have to say over you here, and hear who is saying it, because it is not me. You are accompanied in this room, tonight, in the part nobody else is watching, by the God who never went back to His life. Scripture says the Lord is near to the broken hearted, and near is not a feeling, it is a place, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that nearness a presence in a kitchen instead of a sentence on a page.

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.Psalm 34:18

There is a man in the book of Genesis who knew this room. Jacob, on the road out of home, everybody behind him, nobody ahead of him, the sun gone down and no roof, and he takes a stone of that place and puts it under his head and lies down. That is as alone as a person gets. And in the night God stands over him and says, I am with you, and I will keep you wherever you go, and I will not leave you. Jacob wakes and says the sentence I would put on the wall of every quiet house in the country: surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.

Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.Genesis 28:16

He did not know it because there was no one there to tell him. No knock, no dish, no schedule. Just a stone and the dark. And the Lord was in the place the whole time, before Jacob knew and after, and it did not depend on Jacob feeling it. You are lying on that same ground tonight, and the same Lord is in this place, and it is written that He does not leave. His Spirit is not standing on the doorstep waiting for the friends to come back before He comes in. He is already in.

Near is a place

I want to be careful here, because there is a lie that lives in the quiet house and I know its voice. It says: they stayed while it was fresh, and God stayed while they stayed, and now the accompaniment has moved to Whitfield Road along with the casseroles. It says you were held while somebody was watching, and now nobody is watching, and so nothing is holding.

Hear me. The friends were sent. The dish at the door was a real gift from a real God through real hands. But the friends were never the presence; they were the sign of it. Signs come and go. The One they pointed at does not. You have a God who was in the hallway with the woman holding the dish, and who is in the hallway now that it is empty, and it is His word and not my wish that says so. He promised through the prophet that as one whom his mother comforts, so He comforts, and a mother does not stop when the visitors leave; she stays for the part after. The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter for exactly this hour, the one nobody else can sit through.

And I need to say one thing that has nothing to do with dishes. If the quiet in your house has gone somewhere darker than sadness, if the nights have started to frighten you, then tell one human being tonight, and if you are in any danger call or text a crisis line where you live, 988 in the United States, and tell a doctor or a counselor the truth about the nights. That is not a failure of faith. It is what the Lord uses. God being in the room does not mean nobody else should be, and He is not offended when you call for help.

I know something about the part after. Fire took the western face of a valley I love, and the first weeks were full of people, and then they went home, and the slope was black and quiet and I stood on it alone. The green came back different and it came back slow and I was not alone on it, though for a while it felt like the whole valley had moved on. He does not move on. You are not being visited by God between other appointments; you are being kept, and Scripture says the keeping is wherever you go and does not run out. His Spirit keeps you in the kitchen and in the hallway and in the bed, in every part of the house the schedule never reached.

The breakthrough

Do not do anything yet. Just be where you are, in the quiet house, with the dishes returned. Something is happening here that is not you feeling better and does not need you to.

The Lord who stood over Jacob in the dark is standing in this room. He did not go back to His life when the others went back to theirs, because His life is here. He is not on His way and He is not between visits. You are accompanied, now, in the part nobody else can see, and the word of God says so and the Holy Spirit is the one making it true in your kitchen tonight. He is near, and near is a place, and the place is exactly where you are sitting.

Whatever the meals were, whatever the messages were, they were never the whole of the company. The whole of the company is God, and He has not moved. If you have not felt Him, that is not evidence against Him; Jacob did not feel Him either, and He was in the place. Say the name. He is listening from inside the room.

You have carried a suspicion since the meals stopped that was never true, that the accompaniment moved to Whitfield Road along with the casseroles. Genesis 28:15 has God telling a man on a stone that He will not leave him, and the Holy Spirit is not the one who has been counting knocks at your door.

Declare this over yourself

Now speak, and speak out loud, in the quiet house, where nobody is watching. The authority you were given is delegated and not your own, and it does not depend on how the room feels. Scripture is the ground under every line and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries them; the volume of your voice carries nothing. The mountain in this house is not the loss, which is real and stays. It is the fear that God left when the callers did. Jesus said that whoever speaks to the mountain and does not doubt in his heart has what he says, so speak to that fear, and let Him be near in His own way and at His own pace, whatever He does with the ache.

  1. Quiet house with the last dish returned, you are not empty and you were never once empty. Scripture says the Lord is near to the broken hearted, and near is a place, and the place is here.
  2. Fear that God left when the callers did, get out in the name of Jesus. It is written that Jacob woke on a stone with nobody there and said surely the Lord is in this place, and the Holy Spirit says it now over the part of my grief nobody sees.
  3. Lord, surely You are in this place and I knew it not, as Genesis 28:16 says, and now I do. I say the name out loud to You today, and I thank You, because You did not go back to Your life when everybody else went back to theirs.
